Early weaning can have some benefits for producers in certain situations (such as when feed is short during drought, or when trying to get cows rebred on time), but the calves need a bit of extra care. Doug Husfeld, general manager of Hondo Creek Cattle Company, has been feeding batches of early-weaned calves from Camp Cooley Ranch (in southeast Texas) since 2003. "The most important thing with these calves is to have a very good total herd health program, If the cows are not on a good vaccination program to give those calves adequate passive immunity via colostrum from maternal antibodies, you are looking at a major wreck, because at the feedyard you are bringing them into the dirtiest environment imaginable,"says Husfeld.
