An experiment was conducted in Japan to study the mode of inheritance of weeping habit in Japanese chestnut cultivars Toono, Miyagi, Tochigi, Tatsuno 1, Tatsuno 2 and Gifu. The cultivars were crossed and almost all combinations were compatible, and pollination of approximately 30 flowers resulted in more than 30 fruits. However, Gifu x Toono and Gifu x Tochigi showed small set percentages and produced very few fruits. The results showed that except for Tatsuno where weeping seedlings were among the first generation produced by crossing a weeping tree and an ordinary upright tree, the cross between a weeping tree and an upright tree resulted in upright trees only..
