A study was carried out to compare the influence of different fertigation drip flow rates on the water balance and agronomical results of a tomato crop. Compared with the normal 2-litre/h flow rate that is usually applied, a 1-litre/h flow rate improved nutrient solution retention by the substrate and allowed a significant reduction in water and fertilizer runoff. It also allowed the maintenance of more regular nutrient concentrations at the root level. These differences observed in the water dynamics of the system did not have any consequences on agronomic results because the improvement observed at the beginning of production disappeared progressively to the end of the culture period. This study also presents the advantages and shortcomings of the Solarimeter and Start-bac methods for irrigation scheduling.
