This study was conducted to investigate the effects of NaCl application on the growth, yield and fruit quality of tomato cv. House Momotaro grown under nutrient film technique (NFT). The nutrient solution used was Enshi-Shoho with two different levels of electric conductivity (1.8 and 3.0 dS/m). Plants grown in the lower nutrient solution were treated with NaCl with three levels of concentration in terms of electric conductivity (0, 0.6 and 1.2 dS/m) at 7, 30 and 60 days after transplanting, respectively. Addition of NaCl increased the plant height and leaf colour in the medium with low nutrient concentration. This treatment also increased shoot length at the time of topping and increased root fresh weight at final harvest. Total yields were lowerin plants kept at EC 3.0 fS/m, but this disadvantage in yield was compensated by adding NaCl throughout the growing period. NaCl application throughout the growing period also increased the Brix value (sugar content) of tomato fruits. However, NaCl application increased the incidence of blossom-end rot and decreased the uptake of some cations, including K, Ca and Mg.
