摘要

While systematic reviews focus on the evaluation of methodological quality of included studies, the magnitude of the potential effect of interventions remains usually unknown. Three randomized controlled trials were included in the interesting systematic review by Vancampfort et al.The review concluded that progressive muscle relaxation may decrease psychological distress and anxiety and improve subjective well-being in patients with schizophrenia. In all three randomized controlled trials, one of the main outcomes was the change of anxiety level before and after treatment. All the studies were comparable in design, samples and outcomes. In such circumstances, the pooled effect size can be conveniently calculated even if the results have been obtained using different scales (e.g. State Anxiety Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory).
