The effects of triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) and sucrose concentrations on the embryogenic response of asparagus anther culture were determined. TIBA at 0.05 mg/litre in the induction medium improved the embryogenic response of anthers collected from plants growing under stressed conditions (e.g. insect damage or cold exposure) . TIBA treatment induced embryo formation after a short callusing period. TIBA results were positive in 3 of 5 experiments, and response was associated with plant growth conditions. It is suggested that endogenous hormone levels in the donor plant material and their interactions with TIBA are important to the anther culture response. Low (2%) sucrose concentrations in the induction medium induced embryos that germinated at a frequency of 90%, and the time from culture initiation to plantlet production was 8-10 weeks.
