The seeds from 60 mature ecotypes of P. mahaleb were collected in 1980 and sown. After 5 years 1 seedling per ecotype (designated REAL-1 to REAL-60) was propagated by layering and 2 years later the plantlets were transplanted at a spacing of 5 X 2 m. In February 1988, 8 propagated plants from each ecotype were used as rootstocks, grafting cv. Bigarreau Moreau onto 4 of them, and cv. Ferrovia onto the other 4. Vegetative and reproductive behaviour of the trees was evaluated from 1988 to 1991. Generally, Bigarreau Moreau was less vigorous than Ferrovia. Rootstocks REAL-19 and REAL-24 induced early fruit production in both cultivars. Rootstocks REAL-27B, REAL-48 and REAL-52 reduced the vigour of both cultivars. Several ecotypes were good rootstocks for Bigarreau Moreau but not for Ferrovia. In some cases, the different ecotypes induced considerable phenological variation such as in the time of leaf drop, bud break and fruit ripening.
