During 1988-92, the number of years of harvesting necessary to select the most promising new asparagus hybrids and to define the genetic capacity of new inbred lines was investigated. Of the 79 experimental hybrids studied, the 20 most promising based on yield and quality traits were selected after 2 years harvesting; after 3 years harvesting, an extra 5 were selected. In 1992 the same 25 hybrids were the most promising.
