摘要

Robert L. Metcalf (1916-1998) and Heinz Schmutterer (1926-present) are two highly influential and respectable scientists in entomology and chemical ecology of the New and Old World. Their specific individual characteristics and their impact on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) have been recognized and outlined by their peers on numerous occasions. However, a direct comparison of the two so far is missing. By and large, we perceive both scientists as complementary elements. Prof. Metcalf initially wasmore involved in pesticide development and toxicology, with a strong shift of interest in the aftermath of R. Carson's Silent Spring (1962) toward soft, permanent and sustainable IPM by pheromones, kairomones and environmentally benign cultural control methods. Heinz Schmutterer, on the other hand, while teaching agricultural entomology and environmental sciences in Germany as elegantly and effectively as R. L. Metcalf in the New World, had a very strong worldwide input in the field of plant natural products, specifically neem (Azadirachta indica, Meliaceae). In his laboratory at Giessen, similar to that of Justus von Liebig 150 years before, international guests were in the majority. Both scientists were masters in their respective and related fields and will be considered side by side. Ergograms of both will be compared. Both were multiplicators par excellence of the present knowledge in IPM and environmental science leading to advanced and refined precision IPM without the need for GMOs. Both excelled by their input into public service on many levels and leave behind schools whose permanent influence will be felt in government, academia, and industry.
