Fixed-time AI programmes for beef and dairy cattle in Canada

Although oestrus detection is required for artificial insemination (AI), it has been done poorly in dairy cattle and is difficult in beef cattle. Thus, the benefits of AI are often not exploited. The physiology and endocrinology of the oestrous cycle and ovarian physiology in particular, can have a profound effect on the application of assisted reproductive technologies in cattle, but can be manipulated for the application of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI), or AI without the need for oestrus detection. Protocols that synchronise follicle growth, corpus luteum regression and ovulation, all of which are required for FTAI, have resulted in improved reproductive performance, because all animals are inseminated whether they are observed in oestrus or not. As a result, FTAI protocols have become an integral part of reproductive management in many dairy herds and have offered beef producers the opportunity to incorporate AI into their breeding programmes. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-based protocols are used commonly for FTAI in North America. Protocols that also include the use of a progestin device have resulted in high pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows and suckled beef cows and improved pregnancy rates in heifers and acyclic beef cows. FTAI can also be incorporated into resynchronisation programmes, facilitating early rebreeding of animals that fail to conceive, and eliminating the need for oestrus detection completely, or the use of bulls.
