A disease resembling peach rosette was observed in a 5-year-old orchard of peach cv. Springcrest grafted on peach seedling rootstocks near Salerno, south Italy, in 1988. The disease aetiology and possible phytoplasma involvement were studied over 4years using DAPI, TEM, DNA extraction and PCR amplification techniques. RFLP analysis was used for the first time to characterize a peach rosette phytoplasma isolate. Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) and GF 305 peach seedlings were used as test plants inall experiments involving graft and dodder (Cuscuta campestris) transmission. The trials with back transmission from C. roseus to peach were not conclusive. This is the first report of peach rosette disease in Italy and Europe.
