摘要

Pyomyositis, also known as myositis tropicans (1), is an uncommon form of bacterial infection affecting skeletal muscle. Active duty soldiers may be at risk due to their assignment locations in tropical environments and their level of physical activity. Muscle injury from military-related physical activities or concurrent medical conditions, such as an immunocompromised state or active infection, can predispose individuals to this disease. Culture results from pus or aspirated fluid should be obtained to dictate antibiotic therapy if possible. Blood cultures may be negative, but are worth obtaining in febrile patients. Although less often an etiology of musculoskeletal pain, it is important to consider pyomyositis in this population to achieve timely treatment and prevent long-term morbidity.
