Extensive experiments in the Pb-Cu-Se-O-Br system at 400°C yielded single crystals of nine new compounds (Cu~(2+)Pb_6(SeO_3)_4Br_6, Cu~(2+)Pb_2(SeO_3)_2Br_2, Cu_3~(2+)Pb_(2.4)(SeO_3)_5Br_(0.8), Cu_2~(2+)Pb(SeO_3)_2Br_2, Cu_4~(2+)Pb(SeO_3)_4Br_2, [Cu_9~(2+)Pb_2O_4]- (Cu~+Br_2)(SeO_3)_4Br_5, [Cu_7~(2+)PbO_3](Cu~+Br)_(0.35)(SeO_3)_3Br_4, [Cu_8~(2+)Pb_2O_4]- (Cu~+Br)_(1.5)(SeO_3)_4Br_4, [Cu_6~(2+)Pb_3O_4](Cu~+Pb_(1.27)Br_(3.54))(SeO_3)_4Br_2), all but one exhibiting new complex layered or open-framework architectures, organized via the host-guest principle. Five of these structures contain only bivalent copper: three with well ordered 2D structures and completely filled atomic positions, two structures have 3D frameworks. The four remaining compounds contain both, Cu~(2+) and Cu~+, and comprise layers formed by edge- and vertex-sharing of oxocentered OCu_(4-n)~(2+)Pb_n tetrahedra decorated with SeO_3~(2-) and Br~- anions. The interlayer spaces are filled by partially disordered Cu~+-Br and Pb-Br associations. One remarkable feature of the latter group of compounds is the presence of tetrahedral (Cu~(2+))_4 complexes with arrangements derivable from a kagome network.
