Addressing Coping Strategies and Social Support System Among College Students in Relation to Mental Health Education

It is a well-known fact that college students experience higher level challenges of adolescence and associated issues, especially in societies that are already over-burdened with demographic distress. Apart from mental health professionals, the role of educators, mainly college teachers,is pivotal in addressing the same. In this regard, well-designed training capsules for educators on delivering mental health promotional educational programs are a necessity to enable them to mentor the students effectively. Such training programs are gaining popularity among colleges in Mangaluru,a tier-2 city in India. The prime objectives of the study are to assess the coping strategies, understand the general pattern of utilization of social support systems as well as the gender differences in such utilization among college students. The study used a cross-sectional design witha target population of first-year degree students of a reputed college in the city. The Convenient Sampling method was applied with a self-prepared socio-demographic profile; Coping Checklist (Rao and Subbakrishna, 1989) and Assessment of Social Support Scale (Rao and Pillay, 2002) were usedfor data collection. The data was analyzed through descriptive statistics using SPSS 19.0 version. The study revealed that irrespective of gender, there was a moderate level of problems faced by students, who sought to cope with them by utilizing the available social support systems that includedtrained college teachers. Thus it is obvious that college teachers need to be trained in mental health education so that they become a strong support system for their students.
