A field trip is a group of people journey to a place away from their normal environment usually for observation to provide students with experiences outside their everyday activities. In highway engineering course, it would be an ideal if students could be taken on a tour all aroundthe Malaysia to witness directly how they can apply the theory and obtained experiences starting from asphalt mixture production at quarry until the construction and maintenance activities at site. Unfortunately, it would clearly be impossible to take a group of 100–300 students on suchtrips, because of cost, scheduling and logistic limitations. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual field trips (VFTs) through video aided learning (VAL) as compared to a conventional approach on students’ knowledge acquisition. This studystarts by developing the VAL based on syllabus which covers concepts, principles, procedures, practical and processes of construction activities at sites. Experimental research with control group (Video Aided Learning-VAL vs. Traditional-TRA) and post-tests only was implemented. There were117 participants of civil engineering undergraduate students, attending the Highway Engineering (BFC 32302) module. Participants completed a post-test of multiple choice questions, of all thee syllabus and attended an interview session after 14 weeks of treatment. The result indicated thatboth methods contributed similarly on students’ knowledge acquisition. In this context of study, it can be concluded that either VAL or TRA approach does not favor of students’ knowledge acquisition. Future research should deeply investigate transfer of knowledge into specificdetails. However, an interview indicated that VAL was more encouraging learning than that of TRA approach.
