Identification of milk whey protein biomarkers of early pregnancy status in dairy cattle

Current bovine pregnancy detection methods include rectal palpation, ultrasound scanning, PregnancyAssociated Glycoprotein ELISA assays, Pregnancy Specific Protein B ELISA assays, progesterone immunoassays, in-lineprogesterone testing and visual observation of oestrus (often with the use of aids to detection; e.g. tail paint/heat detectionpads) (Balhara, et al., 2013). However, these assays suffer from limited sensitivity and results from these pregnancy testmethods are not reliable until at least day 28 to 35 post artificial insemination (AI). Therefore, there is a need for thedevelopment of an early, reliable, pregnancy test, which is valid on or before day 21 of pregnancy, and would allowproducers the opportunity to rebreed at the next oestrus. Ideally, this pregnancy test would utilise milk as the preferredanalyte, as a sample can be easily obtained during routine milking and consequently, will not impose any additional stresson the cows.
