NaCl at 75, 150 and 225 mM significantly decreased wheat growth parameters, reducing power, K, K/Na ratio, soluble sugars, and Rubisco as well as expression of alternative oxidase AOX, sodium hydrogen antiporter NHX1, and salt overly sensitive SOS1 genes. On the contrary, lipid peroxides, H2O2, phenolics, proline, and Na were increased. Soaking of grains in 10 mM trehalose recovered the effect of all NaCl concentrations on growth parameters, mitigated the accumulation of H2O2 and peroxides, and increased reducing power, sugars, K, K/Na ratio, phenolics, proline, and Na synchronous with the overcoming of AOX, NHX1, and SOS1 expression. Na lowering by trehalose in concurrence with rising of K and K/Na ratio, synchronous with the recovery in growth reduction, evidenced the role of trehalose in alleviating the adverse effects of NaCl stress through enhancing the expression of genes related to salinity, and may emphasize the need of wheat for trehalose as a supporter to withstand the harsh conditions.
