Xiaoping Ren and Sergio Canavero’s article (Ren and Canavero 2017) expresses more frustration at the academic establishment than a strong defense of HEAVEN against scientific and ethical objections. In principle, we are in favor of head/body transplants, as long as they are done in ways that are as scientifically informed, socially transparent, and philosophically careful as our common morality requires. However, we agree with Paul Root Wolpe’s (2017) assessment and write separately to raise additional concerns from the perspective of a cautious moral community.
