To overcome the problems associated with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as a bone cement, a multinational research team has developed an alternative material reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Specifically, researchers from the Nanotechnology Research Division in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and the University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France, have developed PMMA/hydroxyapatite (PMMA-HA) composites reinforced with MWCNTs. They claim the nanotubes are an outstanding reinforcement for composites, leading to a novel, strong material suitable for bone cement.
