摘要

An artificial bone scaffold that closely imitates the structure of small bones, such as those in the fingers and toes, has been synthesized via microwave heating by researchers at Soonchunhyang University in South Korea. Further, the scaffold enables the efficient growth of bone cells on its surface. It is made from hydroxyapatite outer layers around a zirconium dioxide core. Hydroxyapatite is based on calcium phosphate and is a major constituent of natural bone. While hydroxyapatite encourages bone cell ingrowth, as it is porous like natural bone, it is mechanically weak.
