Fast, low-energy production process for thermoplastics

A process for making thermoplastic composites, developed by a UK-based joint academic-industrial project, is energy efficient and produces parts at much lower costs than current commercial methods. With support from a UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Sustainable Technologies Initiative, the aim of the development, called SUSTCOMP, is to encourage producers to switch to manufacturing thermoplastic composites as opposed to thennosetting types. The move towards the use of thermoplastic types is being driven by impending end-of-life legislation covering the recycling of materials from automobiles: reinforced thermoplastics are far easier to recycle than reinforced thermosetting types. In the collaborative project, industrial partners joined with academic researchers to develop a large prototype diaphragm-forming machine capable of operating at high production speeds.
