South Korea’s government hopes to increase the share of renewable energy generation to 30-35pc by 2040 and to prohibit the building of new coal-fired power plants,according to a presentation on its third energy plan.The ministry of trade,industry and energy (Motie),which presented its long-term plan at a public hearing last week to solicit public opinion,is calling for curbs on coal generation to solve fine dust problems and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.This is the first time the government has officially proposed lifting the share of renewables to as high as 35pc,after it set a goal last year of 20pc renewables by 2030.At present large power producers with more than 500MW of capacity have to meet a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) of 6pc,increasing annually to 10pc by 2023.The target of 30-35pc by 2040 is being proposed after an advisory panel submitted a report to Motie on 7 November 2018 recommending that the country boost renewables to as much as 40pc in its new long-term energy plan.The advisory panel,which included energy experts and community activists,also called for the capping of energy demand at current levels by raising power rates and implementing stricter energy conservation measures.
