We would like to respond to the comments made by Balvinder Sagoo and Pakarian.All modalities for treatment of menorrhagia are provided in our unit including endometrial resection, Thermachoice and Novasure endometrial ablation, abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomy. Furthermore, the standard booking form for hysterectomy has a mandatory entry field where the clinician has to justify why the hysterectomy booked is not through the vaginal route in accordance with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidance. A few of these cases had co-morbidity such as endometriosis, bowel adhesions and large fibroids that made the clinicians suggest a laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy as the preferred option. On average, the length of stay for vaginal hysterectomy in our unit is between 2 and 4 days, and we suspect that the minimal hospital stay has made the laparoscopic hysterectomy more attractive to women.
