摘要

Goat rearing makes a very valuable contribution, especially to the poor in the rural areas and their population contributes 26.4% of the total livestock population in India (Livestock Census, 2012). In the past five decades, the rate of increase in goat population was highest among all ruminants due to their better survival in harsh environments. Further, the rising demand for goat meat, domestically, encourages the farmers to rear goat in large numbers. The rearing of goats gives good return as longas free fodders are available. Similarly, the total sheep population in India contributes 12.7% of the total livestock population (Livestock Census, 2012). Sheep are good economic converters of grass into meat and wool. For the future development and efficient production, a survey was conducted in Chaka block of Allahabad district, Uttar Pradesh to assess the prevailing management practices followed for rearing of small ruminants by the farmers.
