Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) genes are members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-B) super-family, which are multifunctional cytokines with a two-fold function and expressed in a variety of cells. BMPs were originally identified on the basis of their ability to produce ectopic bone formation when implanted within soft tissue in vivo. They also play roles in embryonic development, homeostasis, repairing of various tissues patterning, cell differentiation and apoptosis (Supakorn, 2009). These genes are located on the X chromosome in sheep (Ghoreishi et al., 2011). The BMP2 gene is associated with osteoporosis, promotes osteoblast differentiation and bone formation and repair of bone defects in mammals (Yue et al., 2005; Choi et al., 2006;Schrauwen et al., 2008). In recent years, polymorphism of BMP2 gene and its association with growth traits in livestock and poultry has been reported (Fang et al., 2010; Li et al., 2012). Realising the importance of sheep in Indian economy, particularly in rural economy, the present study with the objective of determining the polymorphism of BMP2 genes was undertaken in Mecheri sheep.
