Impact of crop diversity on the pest incidence and conservation of natural enemies in mulberry eco-system

A study was undertaken to know the impact of existing agricultural & horticultural crops adjacent to mulberry gardens on the pest incidence (in mulberry) as well as abundance of natural enemies under irrigated, semi-irrigated and rainfed conditions insouthern Karnataka. The study revealed that the crops grown in the vicinity of mulberry gardens do not have any significant impact on the incidence of mulberry pests. But, the incidence of major mulberry pests was found higher under irrigated conditionsfollowed by semi-irrigated and rainfed conditions. However, the recovery of augmented predatory beetles varied with crop diversity. Also, mulberry crop itself was found suitable for conservation of natural enemies, especially predatory lady bird beetles.
