In the context of the current discussion of limit values for zinc and zinc compounds, a measurement project was conducted by the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the woodworking and metalworking industries (BGHM) in which the exposure of workers to hazardous substances during discrete process steps under normal conditions in hot-dip galvanizing plants was determined. A total of 800 workplace measurements were performed in 38 hot-dip galvanizing plants.The findings of the measurement programme, which was conducted in the MGU measurement system for exposure assessment of the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions, have been incorporated into the description of exposure to hazardous substances during galvanizing of fabricated articles. This paper contains excerpts from the description of exposure and discusses results obtained in particular during the process steps of workpiece pre-treatment, hot-dip galvanizing in the galvanizing bath and post-processing.
