It is generally admitted that the only macromolecule that needs to be repaired in cells is DNA. Other macromolecules, and proteins in particular, if damaged, can be destroyed and rebuilt. Contrary to this view, a few protein-repair mechanisms have been identified in cells. One of them, protein deglycation, is the subject of this short review. It should be said at the outset that we are still far from understanding all the implications of this new repair mechanism, though the basic fact, that enzymes able to deglycate proteins exist and function in cells, is now clearly established. As explained at the end of this text, it is likely that many more protein repair mechanisms remain to be identified and some of them may play an important role in the pathophysiology of diseases. The lessons derived from the repair mechanisms that have been identified up to now may help identify these unknown mechanisms.
