Gonazon? was used to induce ovulation in cultured European whitefish. Seventy-five sexually mature whitefish females, divided into three equal groups, were used. An additional group (group 4) consisted of 154 females being used for commercial production. Control fish received an injection of vehicle. Fish in the two Gonazon treated groups (group 2 and 3) received an intraperitoneal injection of Gonazon at a dose of 16 and 32 ug/kg bwt., respectively. First ovuladons (4 out of 25) in each of the Gonazon-treated groups were detected 6 days after the injection. In total, during the first 16 days after injection, 64% of fish ovulated in group 2 and 88% in group 3. Only one fish ovulated in the control group. After 1.5 months, a total of 28, 80 and 92% of fish ovulated in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Females in group 4 started to ovulate by day 16 and reached an ovulation rate of 85% by day 61. The mortality rate was 72, 20 and 8% in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The mean percentage of live embryos up to the eyed stage was 64, 82, and 66.5% for groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively and 86% for the commercial production group. The results indicate that Gonazon treatment can significantly accelerate the time of ovulation as well as profoundly shorten the period of spawning. Treatment with the higher dose of Gonazon induced a 20 percentage point loss in live embryos when compared with the commercial (non-handled) fish.
