In November the government imposed a moratorium on tracking after a report by the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) said it was not possible to accurately predict the severity of future seismic activity. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already have measures in place against fracldng but until now Whitehall has been supportive of the shale gas industry, seeing it as a chance to contribute to energy needs for up to 50 years and to create jobs.
