Nottinghamshire County Council has granted permission for a western extension to Kirton quarry, near Mansfield, for the extraction of 5.5 million tonnes of brick clay from a site extending to 20 hectares. Kirton brickworks had operated since the 1950s and made 80 million facing bricks each year using raw material from the adjacent quarry. Clay was also imported from Waingroves quarry, near Ripley, for blending. The quarry produced both red firing clay and cream clay for use in buff bricks.
