Jones et al. [1] call for serious consideration to be given to conducting rigorous and responsible research on the use of naltrexone and other agents with pregnant women in order to manage opioid dependency safely and more effectively than current treatment. They make a strong case for such research by pointing out that preventable uncertainty about how to manage opioid dependency in pregnant women will continue in the absence of research. Moreover, progress would have to rely upon case reports, which would take years to accumulate sufficient data. There is a professional responsibility to perform better. Investigators should conduct clinical trials, the results of which can then be used to reduce uncertainty about clinical management of this patient population in an expeditious fashion.
