The mid-1980s was a time of decision for the mushroom industry. Advances in technology and science meant production was expanding for small family farms as well as corporate players. Success was measured in pounds per square foot, and marketing was haphazard. Growers saw themselves as individual players, not as an organized or cohesive group. They realized they had a common goal but were sometimes working at odds to reach it. Time, knowledge and financial resources were being wasted.
