Light-Activated Nanoparticles Encapsulated with Santalum Album: A Potential Therapeutic Agent for Neurodegenerative Disease

Sandela 803 is a cheap representative synthetic santalum essential oil that has therapeutic effects on neurodegenerative diseases. With development of nanotechnology, many types of nanomaterials loaded with fragrances could regulate release rate of aroma. However, most of them rely on destruction of interaction between fragrances and nanocarriers. These release processes are irreversible and un-sustained. In this study, light-activated mesoporous silica nanocolumns loaded with sandela 803 were designed, prepared and applied to wallpaper. The azobenzene derivatives modified with pore wall served as gatekeepers in the dark, and prevented guest molecules from escaping. By contrast, the azobenzene derivatives acted as brooms for impelling the sandela 803 from the mesoporous in the light. The structures and performances of light-activated mesoporous silica nanocolumns were quite stable during the release process. The release of sandela 803 was thus sustained and controlled. This kind of nano-fragrance with abilities of sustained and controlled release is expected to be used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
