In this paper, an analytical method for determining the packet error rate in non-interleaved fading channels is presented with main focus upon transmission of ATM cells. This method is based on a K-state digital channel model. The fading model is a nonfrequency selective Rayleigh or Rice fading with a first-order low pass spectrum for the quadrature fading components. The analytical method is numerically evaluated, and the influence of the fading bandwidth of the ATM cell error rate and the ATM cell throughput is discussed. Block codes as well as convolutional codes are considered. The results show that without forward error correction the packet (cell) error rate for fast fading is slightly higher than for slow fading. With forward error correction the packet error rate is very sensitive to the fading bandwidth. Furthermore it is shown that a convolutional code with intra packet interleaving is least sensitive to slow fading.
