Tom Fanning, CEO of US utility Southern Co., insisted on Jul. 30 that his company is on target for a November 2021 in-service date for the frst of two AP1000s under construction at Southern’s Vogtle plant, with an “aggressive” schedule still targeting that milestone for May 2021. He took issue with statements by the Georgia Public Service Commission’s staf that those dates were not achievable, saying the staf “doesn’t give us credit” for work done since the targets were established two years ago. Fanning said the impacts from Covid-19 on second-quarter earnings “were not as severe as we originally anticipated” while acknowledging the pandemic had slowed progress at Vogtle and potentially afected his own health. “I tested positive but I was completely asymptomatic,” said Fanning. “And now I’m negative.” He also revealed that Southern subsidiary Georgia Power expects to use its entire cost contingency fund, replenished to $115 million, to complete the twin AP1000s and that its share of total forecast capital costs had increased to $150 million “largely related” to Covid-19 and “other costs.”
