When I met the author of this volume, who is himself a very accomplished soft matter theorist, some years ago, he told me that he would like to write a book that could serve as the missing introductory chapter to the opus magnum of Chaikin and Lubensky Principles of Condensed Matter Physics. Now that we have the finished product in our hands we can indeed conclude that it is a fitting first step towards research in the theoretical aspects of soft matter physics centred mostly on the phenomenology and conceptual background of liquid crystal physics. The author was and is completely correct that the students of the theory of soft matter on a graduate level need an 'in-between' textbook that would safely guide them from undergrad courses towards more advanced topics and methodology.
