There is consensus across the international scientific community that autism is a spectrum disorder (ASD). This is characterized by a group of neurodevelopmental conditions marked by impairments in social interaction and communication, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, or activities (APA, 2013). In recent years, the prevalence rates of ASD have increased dramatically (Isaksen, Diseth, Schjolberg, and Skjeldal, 2013). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014) reported the prevalence of ASD in children in the United States as 1 in 68. At the same time, the views of society on ASD have changed, with more resources being invested in research and development of effective interventions, and a heightened interest in developing useful tools for people with disabilities has arisen in the field of Interactive Computer Technologies.
