World trade in steel declined for the second year running in 2018 amid uncertainties over the trade environment, according to the World Steel Association’s World Steel in Figures 2019 report. Global steel trade in finished and semi-finished steel products declined slightly in 2018 to 457.1 million mt, or 27.1% of a total production of 1.686 billion mt of steel products; down from 462.9 million mt, or 28.7% of a total output of 1.613 billion mt in 2017, according to worldsteel data. By comparison, in 2016, global steel trade accounted for 476.8 million mt, 31.4% of a total output of 1.517 billion mt, the association said.
