It's not difficult to find amateur astronomers who've never spotted the mighty mite of planets. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so you have to catch it at the edges of the day, when many of us are suffering through morning or evening commutes. And this little one moves quickly, orbiting the Sun once every 88 days. This means that when you've finally made plans to leave work early and hit the horizon with a pair of binoculars, Mercury's already begun its dash past the Sun and disappeared from view. Mercury returns to the evening sky around March 1st this year and slips away before month's end. So don't bother marking the calendar, just grab your binos and head outside at the first opportunity.
