Sixty-two onion genotypes were evaluated in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu, India) during rabi 2003-04 for range and phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance for 17 economic dry matter yield characters. Higher estimates of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were observed for bulb weight, economic dry matter yield/ha, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and sulfur contents in relation to economic dry matter yield. Bulb weight, economic dry matter yield/ha and sulfur content were highly heritable. In association analysis, bulb weight, total dry matter production, chlorophyll a, net assimilation rate and total soluble solids had highly positive and significant associations with economic dry matter yield/ha.
