Litter decomposition is a fundamental ecosystem process that is essential to nutrient cycling, to the flow of energy through the decomposer food web, and to soil carbon sequestration. For a given climate, litter quality is a major controller of decomposition via its impacts on the activities of decomposer communities, including those of microarthropods and microorganisms. In nature, litter quality can be strongly affected by the composition of mixtures of litter from different plant species or litter of varying age. In contrast with the decomposition of single litter types, the decomposition of litter mixtures may be non-additive, making its prediction difficult. Positive, non-additive decomposition may occur, for example, when microarthropod density is increased in one litter type due to the presence of a second litter type, or when microbial activity in one litter type is stimulated by the presence of a second litter type. We tested the involvement of microarthropod and microbial communities in positive, non-additive decomposition using a model clover litter - oat straw mixture. We found that positive, nonadditive decomposition was not associated with changes in microarthropod density, but was associated with significant increases in microbial activity.
