Despite the challenge of Iran sanctions, and the possible fallout for oil and gas operations in the Caspian, the region remains active, with recent moves underscoring how important it is for Europe's energy security. On 31 May, Azerbaijan's President llham Aliyev officially opened the first phase of the South Gas Corridor scheme, which will eventually send gas from the giant Shah Deniz 2 field in the Caspian Sea to Europe. Meanwhile, Turkey in mid-June officially opened the section of the Trans Anatolian gas pipeline (Tanap) that extends from the Georgia-Turkey border to Eskisehir, west of Ankara. First gas from the BP-operated Shah Deniz 2 project is expected in mid-2018.
