Laparoscopic techniques have now been part of urological skills for about the past decade and are steadily gaining acceptance. There are many confirmed advantages to the technique, including reduced morbidity and earlier return to normal activity after laparoscopic procedures. Urological oncology encompasses cancers of the kidney, urothelium, prostate, penis, and testis; the oncological outcome measures include recurrence (local and distant), disease-specific survival, and overall survival. Laparoscopic extirpative and reconstructive surgical treatments have been used for each of these organs; in some cases, data collected over a long period support a new standard for treating urological cancers; however, in a few other cases, all we know is that a procedure can be accomplished laparoscopically.
