Plantings of illegal genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton in India have dropped by 88% to 1.6 million acres(650,000 ha),compared with the 3 million acres in 2007(Agrow No 543,p 20).This"significant"reduction was in part helped by Mahyco-Monsanto Biotech's(MMB)anti-illegal BG(MMB's Bollgard cotton)seeds awareness campaign,conducted in partnership with the Indian government,the company says.Some 45,000 Bollgard farmer education and awareness programmes were conducted by MMB,and the authorities carried out raids and educational efforts highlighting the risks of illegal seeds.According to the company,illegal seeds"result in zero or poor yields,higher pesticide costs,and low profits or losses to the farmer".
