Lerroki Forest Reserve is an island of high agronomic potential in the otherwise arid and harsh environment of northern Kenya. This reserve, on the Lerroki Plateau in Samburu District, covers 92 000 hectares with an average elevation of about 2700 m.The forest is an important water catchment area. The Samburu people who live in the area are primarily pastoralists who depend on cattle and livestock for their subsistence. However, their perceptions of trees, forests, their use and their importance vary significantly by age and gender Men, being responsible for cattle husbandry, see the forest as an extensive resource for feeding and watering the livestock, particularly during dry seasons. Women, being responsible for all domestic duties, such as cooking and collecting water and wood for construction, see the forest as a source of firewood, drinking water and building materials. Young men, however, see the forest as an area to which they retreat after circumcision, to feast on wild animals and honey. But for ali the Samburu, the forest has many cultural and spiritual associations that have always precluded any incidents of deliberate forest damage and destruction.
