Clinical trial data available in late 2017 show that a 12-week course of the sofosbuvir+ velpatasvir combination represents an advance over existing treatments for patients with chronic hepatitis C, especially those with genotype 2 infection and either compensated cirrhosis or no cirrhosis.The sofosbuvir + velpatasvir combination yielded a sustained virological response in almost all such patients, making it more effective than the sofosbuvir + ribavirin combination.The rate of virological success is also high in patients with HCV-3 infection, but there are no comparisons with the standard treatment. The adverse effect profile of the sofosbuvir + velpatasvir combination, like that of other antivirals belonging to the same drug classes, appears to be acceptable but is poorly documented. There is a high risk of drug interactions.The price of this treatment, like that of other antivirals approved for use in hepatitis C, is exorbitant.
