Combining insulin degludec and liraglutide in the same injection pen rules out individual dose adjustments of each drug. There is no evidence that this combination prevents the complications of diabetes. When metformin no longer provides satisfactory glycaemic control in a patient with type 2 diabetes, there is no evidence that combining liraglutide (a GLP-1 analogue) with insulin helps prevent the complications of diabetes (1). A fixed-dose combination of insulin degludec (a long-acting insulin) and liraglutide (Xultophy, Novo Nordisk) has nonetheless been authorised in the European Union. Insulin degludec has no proven advantages over other types of insulin (2). There are no clinical trials assessing this combination in the prevention of diabetes complications (3,4).
