BASF Plant Science has acquired the genetically modified amylopectin potato variety, Modena (AV43-6-G7), from developers Avebe (Foxhol, Netherlands). The transfer of ownership is the latest step in a co-operation deal between the two companies to develop specialist GM potatoes. The potato is in the approval pipeline for commercial non-food use in the EU. Last year, the companies started a research collaboration aimed at developing improved varieties of amylopectin potatoes (Agrow No 607, p 4). The co-operation began with the development of a late blight (Phytophthora infestens)-resistant amylopectin starch potato. No financial details of the deal have been disclosed.
