摘要

BASF and Shell have agreed a deal to compensate former Shell workers for damages while at a pesticide plant in Brazil, national media report. Workers from the former Shell agrochemical facility had earlier agreed to a proposal from a judge to guarantee their medical treatment, and "material and moral damages" sustained by contamination from chemical substances, official news agency Agencia Brazil reports. Costs between the two companies total some R$600 million (US$304 million). The facility in Paulinia produced pesticides from 1974 to 2002. It contaminated soil with insecticides, such as aldrin, endrin and dieldrin, Agencia Brasil notes. The plant was subsequently taken over by BASF as part of its acquisition of Cyanamid, which had acquired the plant from Shell in 1993 (Agrow No 191, p 1).
